Lumps and Bumps — Diagnosis and Treatment in Lahore
Finding an unexpected lump under the skin is a common reason people see a surgeon — and in most cases, the lump turns out to be one of a handful of harmless, well-understood conditions. Prof. Dr. Zahid Mahmood provides expert assessment and treatment of lumps and bumps in Lahore, including sebaceous cysts, lipomas, ganglion cysts and swollen lymph nodes — with same-visit clarity on what a lump is and whether it needs treatment.
Common Types of Lumps and Bumps
Sebaceous (Epidermoid) Cyst
A small, dome-shaped lump that forms just under the skin, often with a tiny central punctum (opening). It moves freely with the overlying skin and is usually painless unless it becomes infected. Most commonly found on the scalp, face, neck, or back.
Lipoma
A soft, doughy, rubbery lump made of fatty tissue, sitting just beneath the skin. Lipomas move freely when pressed, grow slowly, and are almost always painless and harmless. They can appear anywhere but are most common on the arms, trunk, back, and shoulders.
Ganglion Cyst
A firm, round, fluid-filled swelling that develops near a joint or tendon — most often on the back of the wrist or hand. It may change size over time and can sometimes cause mild discomfort or restrict movement.
Swollen Lymph Nodes
Lymph nodes commonly swell in the neck, armpit, or groin in response to nearby infection, and usually settle once the infection clears. A lymph node that is painless, persistently enlarged, hard, or keeps growing over several weeks needs proper evaluation.
Where These Lumps Commonly Appear
When to See a Surgeon
Most lumps are benign, but certain features mean a lump should be assessed rather than watched:
- Rapidly growing over weeks
- Hard, or fixed to the underlying tissue
- Larger than 5 cm, or steadily increasing in size
- Painful or tender, especially if new
- Returns after previous removal
- Accompanied by fever, weight loss, or night sweats (especially with a swollen lymph node)
Treatment Options
- Sebaceous cysts and lipomas — usually removed under local anaesthesia as a minor day-case procedure, if they are bothersome, growing, or repeatedly infected
- Ganglion cysts — may be aspirated (drained) or surgically excised, particularly if painful or affecting movement
- Swollen lymph nodes — investigated with ultrasound and, if needed, a biopsy to identify the cause before deciding on treatment
Not every lump needs to be removed — the right approach depends on what it is, how it is behaving, and whether it is causing symptoms.
