Have a Lump in Your Groin? Why You Shouldn’t Ignore a Hernia
By Prof. Dr. Zahid Mahmood — General, Laparoscopic & Laser Surgeon, Lahore
It often starts as something small — a little bulge in the groin or near the navel that appears when you cough or lift, then disappears when you lie down. Many people notice it, decide it’s nothing, and carry on for months or years. As a surgeon, I understand why. But I also see what happens when a simple hernia is left too long — and that is exactly what I want to help you avoid.
What a hernia actually is
A hernia is a bulge of tissue — usually a loop of bowel or some fat — pushing through a weak spot in the muscular wall of the abdomen. Think of an inner tube poking through a weak patch in a tyre. The weak spot may have been there since birth or may have developed over the years through ageing, heavy lifting, chronic cough, straining, or a previous operation.
The one fact everyone should know
A hernia does not heal on its own. There is no cream, tablet, or exercise that closes the gap in the muscle. Left alone, a hernia tends to slowly grow larger. A truss or belt may hold it in for a while, but it treats only the symptom, never the cause.
Why waiting is the real risk
Most hernias are not dangerous at the start. The danger comes when the contents get trapped and cannot be pushed back — and worse, when their blood supply is cut off. This is called strangulation, and it is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate surgery. The warning signs are a hernia that suddenly becomes hard, very painful, and impossible to push back, often with vomiting. An emergency operation is always riskier than a calm, planned repair done weeks or months earlier. That is the whole argument for acting early.
The good news: treatment is easier than ever
Modern hernia surgery is safe, quick, and highly effective. In most cases, the weak area is reinforced with a soft mesh in a “tension-free” way, which has made hernias coming back uncommon. Many repairs can be done by keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery — three tiny incisions, less pain, smaller scars, and a faster return to normal life. Most patients go home the same day.
What you should do
If you have noticed a lump or bulge in your groin, abdomen, or navel — even a painless one — get it checked. Early assessment gives you the simplest, safest treatment and peace of mind. Don’t wait for it to become an emergency.
